Rugs are the woven yarn or thick fabric made by hand or
machine and used for covering floors. Rugs are classified
as machine made rugs and hand made rugs based on the method
used for making them. Machine made rugs are produced in
large number compared to the number of rugs produce by hand
making.
Machine made rugs are usually made of synthetic fibers and
contain fewer flaws and imperfections but check how the
fringe is attached. The fringe of a machine made rug is
glued or sewn on the back of the edge of the rug. Hand
made rugs usually contain inconsistencies or flaws in the
weave or patter and are more often made of natural fibers.
The fringe of a handmade rug is an integral part of the
rug.
Handmade rugs are of different types but generally they are
divided into two basic types, flat weave and knotted rugs.
Gun tufted, hooked, soumak, needlepoint and chain stitched
rugs are other types of handmade rugs. Among these
categories of rugs, hand woven or hand knotted rugs are the
best quality rugs.
Take care when looking to buy a rug even if a rug says it
is handmade it could still be of lesser quality. Inquire
about the types of rugs available and the manufacturing
methods used to make them. Lower quality rugs are made
using hand tufting or hand hooking method. The higher
quality and higher priced rugs are be made by hand knotting
or hand weaving. Tufted rugs can be recognized by the
backing fabric of canvas or other type of material used to
hide the glue that holds the tufted yarn in place. Look
for the hand knotting to be assured of the higher quality
rugs.
There are advantages and disadvantages of both handmade and
machine made rugs. The advantage of a handmade rug is that
the whole or a part of the rugs can be repair by rewoven or
knotted to fix the damages. A handmade rug may last for
more than a century if it is properly cared for. The beauty
of hand made rugs remain longer than the machine made rugs.
In the case of machine made rugs the facility of repairing
is not possible and durability of the rug is low.
The materials used and the method used to make the rug have
a direct effect on the quality. The higher quality rugs
have a finer knotting style and therefore a higher price.
To calculate the quality count the number of knots per
centimeter in the rug. The higher the number the higher
the quality of the rug.
